M1 provides you with a common format for saving waveforms, a common analysis engine, and the same user interface regardless of the source of your waveforms. ScopeCo sees this as obscuring the brand of the hardware that's sending you the waveform, and ASA agrees. For them, that's a bad thing because it reveals their instrument for what it really is - just another commodity ADC platform for acquiring waveforms. But to the engineer trying to get some work done, not having to think about whose waveform-generation platform he happens to be using today - or was using last week - is a very good thing. Being able to correlate results across brands and platforms while not having to learn multiple interfaces is just icing on the cake.
Don't let the platform manufacturers tie you to the hardware
You probably can't afford to give every engineer their own personal scope or digitizer system. So the sooner that one person can finish their work and allow the next person use the hardware, the better. When you're doing heavy debug work though, you may only take a few acquisitions per hour due to the depth to which you need to analyze each waveform. Under the ScopeCo model, the hardware will be tied up for the entire three hours even though the actual acquisitions occupied less than 5 minutes of that time. This is because ScopeCo's add-ons are locked to the hardware, forcing you to do your analysis while sitting at an otherwise-idle instrument.
But ASA provides a very low-cost Reader that allows engineers outside of the lab to do anything M1 can do in the lab. M1 Reader™ allows waveform analysis, debug, etc. away from the device that provided the waveform, thanks to M1's common data format. This means that the debug engineer can take several acquisitions with a variety of settings in a matter of minutes, then take the saved waveforms back to his desk to do the real work, freeing up the hardware for someone else to use.
The result? More efficient use of your scarce/expensive hardware resources, making your engineers more productive. In large labs, you may even find you need fewer instruments, conserving your lab budget.
You know the story: a major customer is evaluating your part that came out a few years ago for their new design. But they're seeing some unusual behavior and claiming the problem must be with your part. So you're tasked with proving that your part is not to blame - and quickly. Sometimes you need to collaborate with a customer who's seeing a problem with your product or a vendor because you're seeing a problem with theirs.
