M1 Waveform Tools™ v7 New Features and Companion Products

As promised, we're back with another newsletter to round out the sweeping collection of capability enhancements introduced with M1™ v7 that we've been officially announcing over the past month.

In addition to straightforward improvements like a color-graded eye diagram and a significant (up to 10x or more) increase in processing speed, below you'll find almost half a dozen major new functionalities in M1WT™ that weren't covered in the last ASA Newsletter.  ASA has also released a pair of highly useful companion products to M1 which are described below as well.

(If you missed last month's newsletter, you can catch up here.)

As always, much more about M1 products can be found at our website, www.m1wt.com, or you can email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

New Automation Features
Expanding M1's lead in waveform-workflow automation in multiple ways

First, the new Express Test™ Automation tool enables users to create efficient test automations without having to know how to program. The tool provides numerous ways to define a specific path through full compliance tests, including an exciting way to work together with the existing Compliance Breakout™ feature.

Another new capability is called MacroScripts™, and employs natural operator actions to create an automation.  MacroScripts are a blazing fast option for authoring repetitive automation sequences where a full-blown M1 TestScript™ isn’t needed. Any M1 action, including acquisition, analysis and reporting, can be incorporated within these automations.

Other major updates to M1’s Automation architecture have to do with additions to the command language which controls M1 from a test-executive. New commands and modes have been added around reporting, saving, and the addition of tools that permit more sophisticated control schemes, among others.

To learn more about M1's unique capabilities for automating your waveform workflow, go to m1wt.com/automation.

M1 Emergency Licensing Server™
'On the shelf' instant license transfer capability without ASA assistance

M1 ELS™ makes sure that your test stand experiences no downtime even when a scope or digitizer needs to be repaired, calibrated, or replaced.  Just transfer your M1WT license to another instrument (either temporarily or permanently) and keep going, regardless of whether or not the new box is the same platform or brand as the old one.

For details, go to the M1 Apps Store at m1wt.com/m1els.

New Compliance Test and Decode Apps
Giving engineers better choices than expensive manufacturer add-on software

We've released a total of six new Compliance Apps and one Decode App along with M1WT v7.  As with all Compliance and Decode Apps in the M1 Apps Store™, these new Apps are available at no cost.

The following Compliance and Decode Apps are newly available:

  • 10 Gb Ethernet
  • USB 3.0
  • Power Analysis
  • LPDDR2
  • DDR3
  • DDR4
  • SATA Decode

To see the entire selection of no-cost compliance and decode Apps, visit the M1 Apps Store at m1wt.com/m1apps.

M1 Waveform Exchange™
Collaborate with customers and vendors even if they don't use M1

M1 Waveform Exchange users are able to invite customers, vendors, or other teams to exchange their waveform data from oscilloscopes, digitizers, or EDA tools. This collaboration facilitates responding to support questions by extending the full depth and breadth of M1 Waveform Tools' analysis and debug capabilities to the waveforms of your partners who don't use M1.

For more information, go to the M1 Apps Store at m1wt.com/m1-waveform-exchange.

File Tags
Categorize and summarize waveforms easily

To assist users in categorizing saved waveforms for later retrieval, M1 now implements a sophisticated File Tag architecture to provide descriptive information about the saved waveform. File Tags are automatically created for certain critical information, and the user can add their own as well. To assist in finding a desired waveform, Tags can be viewed by simply hovering the cursor over the file in Windows Explorer.

To learn more about M1's unique file tagging capability, go to m1wt.com/file-tags.

Waveform Comments
Annotate and track waveform issues with collaborators

An update to M1’s already extensive collaboration capabilities enables users to attach detailed comments to a particular position on the waveform being analyzed. Each comment records a timestamp and author, allowing collaboration to be accurately recorded and tracked.

When an issue is resolved, the comment can be marked as ‘closed’ to enable easy differentiation of what issues remain to be addressed. The comment table also allows for immediate navigation to any comment in any measurement, and will even create the required measurement if it’s not already available.

To learn more about M1 Waveform Comments, go to m1wt.com/waveform-comments.

M1 Assistant™
Helping new users become experts quickly

As with any tool that has the depth and breadth of M1, there can be a learning curve for new users. To the numerous assistive technologies already available, M1 v7 adds the M1 Assistant, providing one-button access to a wide variety of common M1 capabilities. Users can even customize the M1 Assistant to prominently display the most recently used features or a specific set of features that they select.

To learn more about the M1 Assistant, go to m1wt.com/m1-assistant.

M1 v7 Released with a New Name

ASA is proud to announce the release of M1 Waveform Tools v7. With this release, ASA is also changing the name of our flagship product from M1 Oscilloscope Tools™ to M1 Waveform Tools to better reflect ASA’s unique platform-, brand-, and age-agnostic approach and ability to improve customers’ waveform-based workflow far beyond just oscilloscopes.

On the web, m1wt.com/v7 will explain the changes in this new release and how they can positively benefit your waveform-handling tasks.  We've also expanded our website (m1wt.com) to discuss M1 in terms of the impacts that M1WT™ can have on a customer’s workflow rather than just listing individual features and functions as is the norm for the simple, proprietary accessory software offered by the platform manufacturers.

New Platforms Now Supported in M1WT and M1WV
Bringing waveform-handling tools to digitizers and EDA

M1 family tools now support the acquisition of waveforms from digitizers and EDA simulation tools from all of the respective major manufacturers, in addition to the oscilloscopes we have always supported.

Seeking Experienced Oscilloscope Sales Engineers

ASA is seeking talented T&M sales engineers with experience in selling mid to high-end scopes for Tek, Agilent or LeCroy for both direct employment and in an innovative Virtual Field Organization (VFO). The VFO is a tool for these times. We can't directly hire everyone, but VFO is intended to create significant income opportunity for those who can impact our sales. And it gives ASA the opportunity to help out some of the real high-performers we have worked with over the years, while providing a qualified scope sales engineer the ability to build his own job at ASA (the company that invented the scope software market in the 90's).

Given the devastating conditions of this economy, we are limiting this strictly to sales engineers that have been laid off.  To learn more about the openings and the program, please visit www.m1ot.com/field-program-2009.htm. (This program is discontinued as of 1/2014.)

ASA Customer Skills Training

ASA will be launching a range of new training programs starting September 1, 2009. The ASA Customer Skills Training programs are a comprehensive, progressive (i.e. one program builds on others) set of modules that employ multiple learning modes (classroom, hands-on lab, and when certification is being made available, testing.)  Modules are available or are being developed, that cover Product Operation, Applications Knowledge, and select Advanced Topics. Examples include:

  • M1 Basic Flight School where new-users are shown how to use the vast range of capabilities built into M1
  • Debugging techniques
  • Automation - Architecting a scalable M1-based automation system, authoring TestScripts and compliance tests, etc.
  • Topics in Measurement Workflow
  • Migrating from a multi-vendor, multi-title software environment to M1OT.
  • Deploying/managing Site and Enterprise Installations
  • And many more..

For more information about ASA training programs, please visit www.m1ot.com/Skills-Training
.

M1 OT Standard Edition is currently available on a limited basis for just $99. This offer will include your selection of any one ASA supplied compliance test at no additional charge. There is an easy and affordable upgrade path to M1OT-Ultimate available as well with this program.

For information on this promotion go to: www.m1ot.com/m1ot_stdpromo  (This program is discontinued as of 1/2014.)

.

Laid off, or know an engineer who is?

Based on the current state of the electronics industry, ASA has developed our M1 Recommender Program (MRP) to provide a bit of relief by recognizing the value of what you know.  Under the MRP, ASA shares a piece of the revenue with YOU on M1 sales that you help us to discover.

More details about the M1 Recommender Program can be found on ASA's website at www.m1ot.com/MRP.htm  (This program is discontinued as of 1/2014.)
.

Upcoming Features

The next minor release will include the following additions to functionality:

DDR2/3 Read/Write separation in an EyeView - When analyzing DDR2/3 traffic that includes both Reads and Writes, the difference in the timing relationship between strobe and data creates significant problems for a standard eye diagram or eye mask. This new feature will allow the user to have the option to select in the EyeView to display only those bits associated with Reads or only those bits associated with Writes.

FFT of a Multi-Signal measurement - This feature will allow you to examine the spectral content of the Delay behavior between two signals, rather than just the spectral content of each signal separately.  With this feature, you'll now see FFTView as an additional display choice in the last step of the New Measurement wizard when a Multi-Signal measurement has been selected.

M1 Rental Benefits

If your organization frequently uses rental scopes for an extended period, take a look at the opportunity to save thousands of dollars per month by using M1OT instead of ScopeCo's software with these rental oscilloscopes. The additional charges for software can easily exceed $1,500 per scope per month if your requirements include compliance testing such as DDR2, DDR3 or PCIe. With M1OT now available from several rental partners, you will be able to both increase your productivity and lower your monthly expenses.

Organizations relying heavily on rented scopes should also consider that ASA Volume Licensing might be immediately self-funding for their company. If 10 to 15 rental scopes can be identified with software, the M1 Site License will immediately save you money - and that is before taking advantage of the organization-wide impacts that can be realized by having a common tool architecture with advanced debug, team collaboration, off-line processing and able to be deployed anywhere within an entire campus for a low monthly fee.

For more information on the M1 Rental program or our Volume licensing program, contact ASA at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

ASA's Waveform Viewer Announced as Finalist in EE Times "Ultimate Product Award" Category

"WV is intended to help get the engineer OUT of the lab, eliminate congestion around the most popular hardware, and facilitate collaboration among engineers by providing them a way to communicate with each other using actual scope data and explore it as if they were at the scope... wherever they may actually be. Any scope... any place... any time. WV provides engineers with the ability to control where they spend their heartbeats and it's good to know customers appreciate what we're trying to accomplish."

Mike Williams, President ASA Corp

EE Times announced Monday, December 18th, that ASA Corp.'s Waveform Viewer would be named as a finalist in the publication's "Ultimate Product Award" category. The Ultimate Product Award is conducted once every quarter by EE Times in conjunction with EE Product Center. The program allows customers to vote on which product best fulfills their needs in a specific category. Waveform Viewer was named 2nd in the Test and Measurement category. Waveform Viewer was released by ASA Corp. in June 2006 with the intent of getting engineers "out of the lab." With Waveform Viewer, also known as "WV, you're able to capture, view, analyze, save, and report waveforms taken from any scope in your lab. The next step is to use those waveforms in new, more convenient places like conference rooms, meetings or even the comfort of your own home. EE Times posted Waveform Viewer on its partner site www.eeProductCenter.com back in September. The product received the second highest number of customer votes as the "Ultimate Product." ASA was previously awarded third place by EE Times for M1 OT™ v4.06, a version that included a number of important additional scope analysis capabilities. ASA has been giving away WV, originally priced at $145, since the product was released. More information on Waveform Viewer and its latest award can be found by visiting the ASA website.

ASA Congratulates Agilent Technologies on the Release of "First" DDR2 Compliance Test

Agilent Technologies announced on Wednesday, December 14th that the company was releasing "the industry's first oscilloscope-based DDR2 compliance test application." (www.agilent.com/about/newsroom) When approached for comment, Mike Williams, President of ASA Corp reacted with, "Huh...didn't we do that, like, three years ago?" And indeed, in verifying Williams' claim, it was discovered that ASA did publish and publicly announce a DDR2 compliance test in April of 2004 as a no charge ASM (Application-Specific Measurement) in version 3.0 of their M1 analysis software, and also that the current version of the DDR spec (JESD79-2C) is presently available as a no cost TestScript for M1 Oscilloscope Tools.

Agilent has been selling M1 Oscilloscope Tools for over 3 years, so although the company's accomplishment is noteworthy, Agilent's customers have, in fact, had access to this capability for over 2 1/2 years. Agilent announced a cost of $3,001 for the test, but to actually run the product a customer would be required to also purchase an additional $13,000 in Serial Data and Infiniiscan software, for a total commitment of $16,000 to get into DDR2 testing. ASA's DDR2 TestScript, along with dozens of capabilities that other companies have previously claimed as 'firsts,' as well as numerous measurement abilities they don't have, are all available under the inclusive pricing strategy of M1 Oscilloscope Tools.

"If paying $16k to get a simple compliance test winds your spring, then here's a prime opportunity," said Williams. "However, this is, to me, another component in an unsustainable model of 'automation' that all of the scope companies are chasing... where the customer waits 9-12 months, or in this case 2.5 years, for the scope manufacturer to finally offer the application. When it comes out, it's expensive... it requires other expensive software to actually run... and then it only runs on some of their hardware. The M1 Oscilloscope Tools model is as opposite of that as it can be, and that includes moving the place where applications can be written from the manufacturer to the end-user. You can quickly click together any compliance test or automation you might want to have in M1, and have it when you want it... not months or years later. Our commitment is to be first... to run on whatever scope you own... and to include new capability within the product at no additional charge. When we use the words 'first', 'innovate' and 'revolutionary', we mean it."

Further information regarding ASA's DDR2 Compliance Test can be found at the ASA Newsroom Archives.
